The Search: Job Searching During COVID-19

Written By: Shakoya Brown, Hustle Intern

As we continue with what has been deemed the “new normal” during the COVID-19 Pandemic, there are hundreds of thousands of people in search of that next career opportunity. Whether you have been unemployed or looking to take the next steps in your career, here are 4 tips that can help you prepare for the search.

Know Your Niche: What are your strengths? What are your weaknesses?

  • To identify and appeal to potential employers, you must first understand who you are as an employee and what you bring to the table.

  • Identify strengths and weaknesses. Highlight your strengths within your resume. But, remember that your weaknesses may arise during an interview. Know them. Be able to express how they have made you better and how they have taught you valuable lessons in past positions.

Perfect Your Craft, Enhance Your Skillset

  • Quarantine has led to higher education and career-oriented platforms to develop online courses to generate more knowledge and help you become certified in certain skills. Check with respective universities to see what they may be offering.

Sites to Check Out:

  • Coursera - Free Online Skills Courses

  • EDx - Free Online Courses from Colleges & Universities

  • Grow With Google - Professional Career Certificates

Bridge The Gap: Where You Are vs Where You Want To Be

  • Maintaining a professional network is essential at any time. Amplify your LinkedIn, reach out to fellow alumni in similar career fields, reconnect with recent connections.

  • Use the downtime the pandemic has caused to amplify your personal brand and become familiar with job questionnaires and virtual interview platforms like Google Hangout, Zoom, and Skype.
